Description:
A rather small, very dark sandpiper, stockier, darker greenish-yellow legs. Adult breeding has white streaking on crown and neck, heavily streaked breast, and prominent whitish spotting on upperparts. Adult non-breeding is more uniform on head and breast, and is less distinctly spotted on upperparts.
Distribution:
Common passage migrant through all the major waterways and lakes of Gilgit-Baltistan. Usually found in wide variety of wetlands; including marshes, lakes, river banks, boggy areas and grasslands. From lowlands up to 3500m during passage migration.
Behavior:
Mainly pecks food from shallow water and from surface of ground and plants; rarely probes; sometimes uses trampling to stir up food and turns over stones underwater. Feeds on aquatic and terrestrial insects, mainly adults and larvae of beetles, but also dragonfly larvae, ants, water-bugs and moth larvae; annelids, small crustaceans, spiders, fish and plant fragments.
